Anna Weston, Panic Strap Optional (2025). oil on board. 70 x 90cm. Finalist: Portia Geach Memorial Award 2025

‘Panic Strap Optional’ (2025) is a contemporary woman artist’s response to an answer to Jacques-Louis David’s Napoleon Crossing the Alps or Bonaparte at the St Bernard Pass, 1800–01. Apart from the irony that my childhood pony was named Boneparte, the experiences of David, Napolean and myself are vastly different. Contrasting the aggrandising portrait of the leader of men and the Napoleonic Code, my self-portrait acknowledges the immense impact of women artists across the (global) canon. The horse is without a bridle, my confidence in it and our capacity to quietly but tenaciously navigate an uncertain personal, environmental and political future.
