What She Said critically engages the theme of women’s embodied agency – specifically one’s ‘capacity to act’, being seen and using one’s voice. Eight women were interviewed via Zoom about their understanding and experiences of agency. The responses were candid and prompted a series of paintings that capture the women mid articulation / communication with careful attention to facial expression, gesture and painterly style. Fitting with the theme, Weston embodied a gestural painting style. Key interview moments are displayed via video. What She Said addresses the complexities, difficulties and essential nature of how woman are permitted, or not, to embody agency in our current socio-political environment.
