The Complex Apartment

This series of quirky narrative paintings explores the joys and perils of apartment living. Initially cynical – borne of a desire to ‘paint through’ the melodrama of the community in which I live - the process evolved to include a lighter view of the inevitabilities of coexisting in these deeply historical but ultra-contemporary lifestyle spaces. In the making of these paintings, I thought about paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Great and Hieronymus Bosch that I encountered in Venice. Their ability to make small paintings that contain a multifaceted human universe have captivated audiences across time.
